BaZi unfolds across time through a system of overlapping cycles: the Luck Pillars (大运, Dà Yùn), Annual Flows (流年, Liú Nián), Monthly Flows (流月), and Daily Flows (流日). Together, they create a multi-layered temporal map that explains not just who you are, but when different aspects of your life will be activated.

Luck Pillars (大运)
The Luck Pillars are the most important timing mechanism in BaZi. Derived from the Month Pillar of your natal chart, they progress sequentially through the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches — each pillar governing a ten-year period. The direction of progression (forward or backward through the sexagenary cycle) is determined by your gender and the Yin/Yang polarity of your birth year.
Each Luck Pillar introduces a new pair of elemental energies that interact with your natal chart. A favorable Luck Pillar can unlock dormant potential, smooth over weaknesses, and bring opportunities. An unfavorable one can create friction, challenges, and the need for strategic adaptation.

Calculating Your Luck Pillars
Luck Pillar calculation requires your exact birth date, time, and gender. The starting age of your first Luck Pillar varies — it can begin anywhere from age 1 to age 9, calculated from the distance between your birth date and the nearest seasonal node (节气). This is why two people born days apart can have very different life rhythms.
