The Ten Gods

What Are the Ten Gods?

The Ten Gods (十神, Shí Shén) are the cornerstone of BaZi interpretation. They are not deities but archetypal relationships — defined by how each element in your chart relates to your Day Master. Just as every person in your life plays a role (parent, rival, mentor, partner), every element in your birth chart assumes a specific function based on whether it generates you, controls you, or is generated or controlled by you.

How They Are Derived

Your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — is the reference point. Each of the other four elements relates to it through the generating and controlling cycles, with an additional distinction between same-polarity (Yang-Yang or Yin-Yin) and opposite-polarity (Yang-Yin) interactions. This gives rise to ten distinct relationships: five pairs, each with a direct and an indirect variant.

The Five Pairs

Each pair shares the same elemental relationship but differs in polarity. The direct variant (opposite polarity) tends to be gentler and more conventional; the indirect variant (same polarity) is more intense and unconventional.

Reading Ten Gods in Your Chart

In a BaZi chart, Ten Gods appear at every position — each of the eight characters hosts a Ten God relative to your Day Master. The Year Pillar reflects ancestry and early life, the Month Pillar governs career and social standing, the Day Pillar (Branch) reveals your spouse and inner world, and the Hour Pillar points to children, legacy, and late life. The strength, combination, and clash of these Ten Gods across positions creates the unique narrative of your destiny.
